2014 Russell Athletic Bowl Preview

Oklahoma (8-4 - Big 12) vs #17 Clemson (9-3 - ACC)

Date: Monday, December 29, 2014
Time: 5:30 p.m. (EST)
Television: ESPN

Oklahoma has played in a lot of bowl games, but this is the first time the Crimson and Cream will take the field in the game once known as the Tangerine Bowl. Now the Russell Athletic Bowl, this game was originally held in Miami, and has had more name changes than someone in the witness protection program. Ok, so this bowl game ain't exactly the Orange Bowl, but it is in Florida, specifically Orlando – home of DisneyWorld so there's that.

The game matches the brothers Stoops against the Sooners' former DC Brent Venables. Bob Stoops' history with Venables goes back to when Bob recruited Brent to play linebacker at Kansas State. Venables has the number one total defense in the country this season – for whatever that is worth playing in the bottom-light ACC and non-con games against juggernauts South Carolina State and Georgia State.

Trevor Knight has been cleared to play in the game and that should help. If WR Sterling Shepherd has healed from his hamstring issues that should help as well. Clemson will be short their starting QB due to knee injury. Backup QB Cole Staudt is not much of a dual threat, which always gives the Sooners problems. If OU is motivated to finish an otherwise disappointing season on a strong note they should win by a couple of scores. If not, Clemson will be more than happy to take the Magic Kingdom.

The Law wonders if the whole consolation game irony has occurred to the folks in Norman.
