Florida Gators Football 10-year Review

College Sports Fans reviews the Florida Gators, one of the top NCAA college football programs

Florida Gators Football

The University of Florida has been a major player in the national scene of college football forthe better part of the last decade. The numbers speak forthemselves: 2 national championships, 3 SEC championships, 6 bowl wins and 10 first team All-Americans. The staple of the Gators teams has been teams rich with speedy, athletic players. These types of players have worked very well in the offensive systems of legendary coach Steve Spurrier and more recently Urban Meyer. Florida did hit a bit of a down stretch for 3 seasons under Ron Zook who replaced Spurrier after Spurrier left the Gators forthe NFL. Overthat stretch Florida never won more than 8 games. But Florida is back onthe map under Meyer, entering this season as the reining national champions after demolishing a favored Ohio State team last season.

Of course one more thing to keep in mind when considering Florida is how impressive of a job the program does at not only recruiting top notch prospects, but at developing these players as well into future pros. Since 1996 the Gators have had an astounding 66 players drafted by NFL teams.

Florida Football Future Outlook

It's another strong season in Gainesville this year, although at 6-2 the Gators won't be inthe hunt for a repeat national championship. Sophomore quarterback Tim Tebow is a legitimate heisman candidate already, and should be one of, if not the favorite entering next season.

The Gators should have another strong recruiting class when the signing period comes to an endthis season. They already have commitments fromthree players ranked in the Rivals 100, includingthe #14 overall prospect Will Allen, the all-purpose phenom out of St. Peter's Prep in New Jersey.
