Villanova Wildcats NCAA Tournament History & Scores

Villanova Wildcats All-Time NCAA Tournament Record: 51-35

The Villanova Wildcats have a strong history of NCAA Tournament success beginning at the inaugural NCAA Tournament in 1939 when they were a member of the Final Four. The Wildcats have been to the Final Four three other times including 1971, 1985 and 2009 winning the NCAA Tournament Championship in 1985 under head coach Rollie Massimino. Heading into the 2011 NCAA Tournament, Villanova had been in the Big Dance in consecutive seasons from 2005-2011. In addition, Villanova was crowned the Champions of the NIT Tournament in 1994.



1939 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Brown in regional semifinal, 42-30
  • Lost to Ohio State in regional final, 53-36

1949 NCAA Tournament

  • Lost to Kentucky in regional semifinal, 85-72
  • Defeated Yale in third place game, 78-67

1951 NCAA Tournament

  • Lost to North Carolina State in second round, 67-62

1955 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Duke in first round, 74-73
  • Lost to Canisius in second round, 73-71
  • Defeated Princeton in third place game, 64-57

1962 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated West Virginia in second round, 90-75
  • Defeated New York University in regional semifinal, 79-76
  • Lost to Wake Forest in regional final, 79-69

1964 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Providence in second round, 77-66
  • Lost to Duke in regional semifinal, 87-73
  • Defeated Princeton in third place game, 74-62

1969 NCAA Tournament

  • Lost to Davidson in second round, 75-61

1970 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Temple in second round, 77-69
  • Defeated Niagara in regional semifinal, 98-73
  • Lost to St. Bonaventure in regional final, 97-74

1971 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Saint Joseph's in second round, 93-75
  • Defeated Fordham in regional semifinal, 85-75
  • Defeated Pennsylvania in regional final, 90-47
  • Defeated Western Kentucky in National Semifinal, 92-89
  • Lost to UCLA in National Championship, 68-62

1972 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated East Carolina in second round, 85-70
  • Lost to Pennsylvania in regional semifinal, 78-67 Lost to South Carolina in third place game, 90-78

1978 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated La Salle in second round, 103-97
  • Defeated Indiana in regional semifinal, 61-60
  • Lost to Duke in regional final, 90-72

1980 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Marquette in first round, 77-59
  • Lost to Syracuse in second round, 97-83

1981 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Houston in first round, 90-72
  • Lost to Virginia in second round, 54-50

1982 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Northeastern in second round, 76-72
  • Defeated Memphis in regional semifinal, 70-66
  • Lost to North Carolina in regional final, 70-60

1983 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Lamar in second round, 60-58
  • Defeated Iowa in regional semifinal, 55-54
  • Lost to Houston in regional final, 89-71

1984 NCAA Tournament

1985 NCAA Tournament
