Ohio State Buckeyes All-Time NCAA Tournament Record: 45-26

The Ohio State Buckeyes, known as a football powerhouse, have had solid success in the NCAA Tournament but have not won a National Championship since 1960. An 8-time Final Four participant, Ohio State has played in the Big Dance 31 times but their four NCAA Tournament appearances from 1999-2002 and 1999 Final Four appearance were vacated due to NCAA sanctions. The Buckeyes won the 1986 and 2008 NIT Tournaments and have played in the Big Dance consistently under Thad Matta.


1939 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Wake Forest in regional semifinal, 64-52
  • Defeated Villanova in regional final, 53-36
  • Lost to Oregon in National Championship, 46-33

1944 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Temple in regional semifinal, 57-47
  • Lost to Dartmouth in regional final, 60-53

1945 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Kentucky in regional semifinal, 45-37
  • Lost to New York University in regional final, 70-65

1946 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Harvard in regional semifinal, 46-38
  • Lost to North Carolina in regional final, 60-57
  • Defeated California in third place game, 63-45

1950 NCAA Tournament

  • Lost to City College of New in regional semifinal, 56-55
  • Defeated Holy Cross in third place game, 72-52

1960 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Western Kentucky in regional semifinal, 98-79
  • Defeated Georgia Tech in regional final, 86-69
  • Defeated New York University in National Semifinal, 76-54
  • Defeated California in National Championship, 75-55

1961 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Louisville in regional semifinal, 56-55
  • Defeated Kentucky in regional final, 87-74
  • Defeated Saint Joseph's in National Semifinal, 95-69
  • Lost to Cincinnati in National Championship, 70-65

1962 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Western Kentucky in regional semifinal, 93-73
  • Defeated Kentucky in regional final, 74-64
  • Defeated Wake Forest in National Semifinal, 84-68
  • Lost to Cincinnati in National Championship, 71-59

1968 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated East Tennessee State in regional semifinal, 79-72
  • Defeated Kentucky in regional final, 82-81
  • Lost to North Carolina in National Semifinal, 80-66
  • Defeated Houston in third place game, 89-85

1971 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Marquette in regional semifinal, 60-59
  • Lost to Western Kentucky in regional final, 81-78

1980 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Arizona State in second round, 89-75
  • Lost to UCLA in regional semifinal, 72-68

1982 NCAA Tournament

  • Lost to James Madison in first round, 55-48

1983 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Syracuse in second round, 79-74
  • Lost to North Carolina in regional semifinal, 64-51

1985 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Iowa State in first round, 75-64
  • Lost to Louisiana Tech in second round, 79-67

1987 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Kentucky in first round, 91-77
  • Lost to Georgetown in second round, 82-79

1990 NCAA Tournament
