Michigan State Spartans All-Time NCAA Tournament Record: 62-28

The Michigan State Spartans have a history of NCAA Tournament success thanks to an incredible run over the past 15-20 years. The Spartans hired Tom Izzo in 1995 and after consecutive NIT Tournament appearances Michigan State basketball became a nation powerhouse in the world of college basketball. The Spartans played in 18 straight NCAA Tournaments from 1998-2015 winning the Championship in 2000 and reaching the Final Four six times during that stretch. Historically, Michigan State has played in the Sweet 16 consistently during the Tom Izzo era.


1957 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Notre Dame in regional semifinal, 85-83
  • Defeated Kentucky in regional final, 80-68
  • Lost to North Carolina in National Semifinal, 74-70
  • Lost to San Francisco in third place game, 67-60

1959 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Marquette in regional semifinal, 74-69
  • Lost to Louisville in regional final, 88-81

1978 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Providence in second round, 77-63
  • Defeated Western Kentucky in regional semifinal, 90-69
  • Lost to Kentucky in regional final, 52-49

1979 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Lamar in second round, 95-64
  • Defeated LSU in regional semifinal, 87-71
  • Defeated Notre Dame in regional final, 80-68
  • Defeated Pennsylvania in National Semifinal, 101-67
  • Defeated Indiana State in National Championship, 75-64

1983 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Utah State in first round, 64-59
  • Defeated Missouri in second round, 77-63
  • Lost to Villanova in regional semifinal, 55-54

1985 NCAA Tournament

1986 NCAA Tournament

1994 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Seton Hall in first round, 84-73

1998 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Eastern Michigan in first round, 83-71
  • Defeated Princeton in second round, 63-56
  • Lost to North Carolina in regional semifinal, 73-58

1999 NCAA Tournament

  • Defeated Mount St. Mary's in first round, 76-53
  • Defeated Mississippi in second round, 74-66
  • Defeated Oklahoma in regional semifinal, 54-46
  • Defeated Kentucky in regional final, 73-66
