2011 NCAA Tournament Projections - March 13, 2011

This season’s NCAA tournament has expanded to 68 teams, making it the biggest in history. The new selection procedures are therefore very important to state:

• 31 conferences receive automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament

• The remainder of the bids will be filled by 37 at large teams

• The lowest four rated conference champions will compete for two 16 seeds

• The lowest four rated at-large teams will compete for two seeds, likely in the 10-12 range

So essentially, the little league conference champions won’t be singled out for the ‘play-in’ games, allowing the last few at large teams to earn a play in bid as well. Teams with a * next to their name have already clinched tournament bids.
