2010 Western Athletic Conference Preview

It is the end of an era in the WAC this season as 2010 will mark the final year of the mighty Boise State Broncos as league members. BSU is leaving for the greener pastures of the more prestigious Mountain West Conference, a move that could simultaneously bring a higher level of competition and insignificance to the WAC in future seasons. Think about it: If Boise State leaves with their 1,348th WAC Championship, the rest of the league will suffer because it will seem like they’re a 3rd rate conference that just lost their one good team.

Enter Nevada. I really think that this could be the season that someone knocks off the Broncos and the Wolf Pack and their national-best running game might just be the team to do it. With the all-important showdown set up to be played in Reno this year, Boise State could leave the league without a championship in their final campaign.

The rest of the league will also be interesting to watch. Can Idaho repeat their shocking success of 2009? Will Louisiana Tech move ahead seamlessly despite losing coach Derek Dooley to Tennessee? Can Utah State recover from the loss of one of the country’s elite runners? With all of those questions and many, many more to be answered, there is no doubt that 2010 will be a great season for the WAC as Boise State bids adieu to its home of more than a decade.
