Prospects League Leaders & The Chillicothe Paints Still Undefeated

The Prospects League began their season on June 3rd and already the buzz about the MLB draft has left them bubbling. From within their ranks, two players were taken in the draft. The left handed hurler Hunter Ackerman was taken by the Chicago Cubs as their 130th overall selection, and right handed pitcher Kevin Shackelford was taken in the 21st round by the Brewers. As beautiful as these stories are, the season for the Prospects League is in full throttle, and the Chillicothe Paints are undefeated in their first 6 games. They are led by Jeff Holm a junior at Michigan State. He’s hitting .435 with an on base percentage of .536, a homerun, and 9 runs batting in. The Paints are also well serviced by two arms showing strength early on in the season. A right handed pitcher currently a sophomore at Grand Valley State has tossed 5 innings so far and is 2-0, with 5 strike outs, and an ERA of 0.00. His teammate and fellow pitcher Matt Barnes is coming up just as strong. A junior at Wooster, Barnes is 1-0 in 6 innings. He’s given up a run on 6 strike outs and has an ERA of 1.50.

In their last game against the Slippery Rock Sliders, the Paints won by the score of 11-10 on a night where Jeff Holm went 4 for 5 and drove in 5 runs. The Prospects League is extremely competitive as a whole. The league is being led by a youngster that’s only a freshman Lincoln Trail Community College. His .471 batting average and .591 on base percentage for the West Virginia Miners are amongst the top in the league. The Hannibal Cavemen have two players treading successful waters as a couple of the leagues top leaders. Matt Burton is a sophomore at Redlands Community College, and as a Caveman is reaching for the top with a .462 batting average, 2 homeruns, and 5 RBI’s, and an on base percentage of .533. His teammate, pitcher Mark Sappington is only a freshman at Rockhurst and is already one of the Prospect Leagues emerging pitchers. Sappington is 10 innings into his season; he’s 1-0, with 8 strike outs, and an ERA of 0.99.
