The 2010 NCAA Tournament - A User’s Guide to the South Region

Predicting the NCAA Tournament is the most difficult sport to prognosticate. The upsets are there but it’s almost impossible to select the correct games. The 2010 tourney may be even more difficult as parity has infiltrated college basketball. The South Region is easily the weakest region The following is a guide for your office pools:

Favorites: The Duke Blue Devils lead the way. They are led by the experienced trifecta of Jon Scheyer, Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith. The Villanova Wildcats have struggled of late but are very talented with high level guard play. Outside of the top two no one would have picked any other team in the region to play in The Final Four. However, with the lack of depth in the region this could be the ultimate Cinderella story as a repeat of George Mason could happen.

Potential Upsets: The Purdue Boilermakers are a shell of themselves without injured forward Robbie Hummel. They are still very talented but have yet to settle in. This won’t change as they will get knocked out of the tournament by the talented and aggressive Siena Saints who boast four starters scoring in double figures. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish turned around their season by changing their strategy. They now employ a slow down attack which resulted in a change of fortune which propelled them into the tournament. They will face a dangerous and big team in Old Dominion. In what will be an ugly low scoring game the Monarchs will upset the Fighting Irish. A lot of the pundits are jumping on the Richmond Spiders. They will vault off the wagon as St. Mary’s will send Richmond packing. In the 2 nd round Duke will face a tough Louisville squad who will give them all they want in a classic but Duke will prevail. Sienna will knock off Texas A&M in the 2 nd round and give Duke a scare in the Sweet Sixteen.
