The 2010 NCAA Tournament - A User’s Guide to the East Region

Predicting the NCAA Tournament is the most difficult sport to prognosticate. The upsets are there but it’s almost impossible to select the correct games. The 2010 tourney may be even more difficult as parity has infiltrated college basketball. However, the East Region is top heavy but could have some early upsets. The top seeded Kentucky Wildcats are very talented but are inexperienced and often loose their focus. The following is a guide for your office pools:

Favorites: The Kentucky Wildcats are the most talented team in the region but also the youngest. They have a great guard in John Wall and a solid big man in DeMarcus Cousins. The West Virginia Mountaineers are also a very dangerous team with a great swing man in Da’Sean Butler. They also have versatile players in Devin Ebanks and Kevin Jones. The East Region is relatively weak outside of Kentucky and West Virginia. If any other team advances to The Final Four it will be a big surprise.

Possible Upsets: The Cornell Big Red are a very good team and fit the bill for a 5-12 upset. They are led by sharp shooter Ryan Wittman who can light it up on any given night. They face a tough Temple team but should be able to solve their zone and get the victory. The #11 seed Washington Huskies are on a roll and will continue their streak with an upset of Marquette. The Huskies’ star forward Quincy Pondexter will have a big game and PG Isaiah Thomas will control the tempo leading the Huskies to the upset victory.

Predictions: The young Wildcats will get a second round test when they battle the underachieving Texas Longhorns. Texas has the talent to pull of the biggest upset of the tournament. Not only will Cornell upset Temple they will also advance to the Sweet Sixteen and they will give the winner of Kentucky/Texas a battle. The Washington Huskies won’t stop with their upset of Marquette as they will defeat the New Mexico Lobos and advance to the Sweet Sixteen. The West Virginia Mountaineers will dominate the bottom half of the region and defeat either Texas or Kentucky to advance to The Final Four.
