Ohio State Buckeyes Basketball 10-year Review
College Sports Fans reviews Ohio State, one of the NCAA’s top athletic programs
Ohio State Basketball
The Ohio State Buckeyes have never been a consistently strong basketball program. During the early 90’s behind the stellar play of Jim Jackson the Buckeyes had a couple of nice runs in the NCAA Tournament, but they wouldn’t find success again until the end of the decade. Ohio State made the tournament every year between 1999 and 2002 under the coaching of Jim O’Brien; these appearances, along with most of the Buckeye’s wins would be vacated by the NCAA after it was learned that O’Brien had committed seven NCAA violations, including lending $6,000 to a recruit. Recently many of these violations have been thrown out by the NCAA due to a missed deadline to submit paperwork, but Ohio State has chosen to keep the vacated seasons and the sanctions in tact.

Ohio State Basketball Future Outlook
Ohio State fans may be reeling right now with Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr., and Daequan Cook all having recently declared for the NBA draft, but they need not worry. Only Oden is a definite lock to leave school, and even if the other two players choose to do so as well, there is a tremendous amount of talent coming into the program, as well as solid players returning. Jamar Butler, Othello Hunter, and David Lighty will all be returning for the 2007-08 season. These players would likely start on many teams throughout the country, but due to the abundance of talent on the Buckeyes this year, they were relegated to roll players. In addition, Ohio State has a stellar recruiting class for next season. They have five recruits ranked in the ESPN top 150, including 7-footer Kosta Koufus, widely considered the second best center prospect in his class. Looking ahead to 2008, Ohio State already has commitments from four players who are listed as 5-star recruits by Scout.com. Head coach Thad Matta is an outstanding recruiter, and there is no reason to think that he won’t continue bringing in the nation’s top players.
